How To Return Gifts: Dealing With Unwanted Presents

Dealing with Unwanted Holiday Gifts Effortlessly

You unwrap a gift and discover that it is not quite what you desired or expected, and it has occurred to each of us.

What To Do With It?

Perhaps the sweater is a couple of sizes too large. Perhaps it's a novel that you already own. Regardless of how grateful you are, it is not going to work.

So how can you get rid of it without causing a scene?

To begin, it's probably not a good idea to return an item within the first few days following Christmas — they're madhouses filled with a hundred other individuals trying to return stuff, in case you hadn't noticed.

Fortunately, many retailers provide long return periods following Christmas.

Return It To The Store

Generally, you'll have at least 30 days to return an item, and some retailers, such as Walmart and Target, offer a 90-day return window on many items. Much better to return in February after the crowds have lessened, if possible.

Bear in mind; however, that return periods for electronics are usually shorter. Walmart and Target both offer a 30-day return period on such items, while Target mandates a 15-day return period on Apple products.

Amazon typically accepts returns after 30 days of purchase, but anything purchased between October 1 and December 31 may be returned until January 31, 2022.

Some Stores' Return Policies

Other retailers' return policies, according to ConsumerWorld.org, include the following:

Bed, Bath & Beyond: has a 90-day return policy on the majority of merchandise. 30 days for smart technology. Purchases made beginning November 15 must be returned by January 31.

Best Buy: has extended the return date to January 16 for items purchased between October 18 and January 2.

Costco: There is no deadline, although most electronics such as televisions, computers, cameras, smartwatches, and cellphones have a 90-day return period.

Macy's: offers a 90-day return policy on the majority of merchandise. Items purchased from October 5 must be returned by January 31. Additionally, Macys.com orders qualify for free mail returns.

REI: accepts returns and exchanges on the majority of items up to a year after purchase, except for outdoor electronics. Returns are accepted via mail or in-store. If you do not have a receipt, fill out a note, and REI can assist you in identifying proof of purchase. All returns and exchanges must be made in-store.

Possible Scenarios

Hopefully, the person who gave you the gift was thoughtful enough to add a gift receipt, as this simplifies matters considerably. If the receipt is in your possession and the item is untouched or unharmed, you can typically receive a full credit or even a refund.

If an item is damaged, certain states compel retailers to repair it or offer the customer the option of replacing it or receiving a refund, regardless of the store's return policy.

Even without a receipt, some businesses may give you partial credit for a return, so returning an unwanted item is always worth a shot.

And if you're unable to return something, there's always the age-old remedy for a present you're not going to use: wrap it up and then give it to someone else the next year.
